THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/belarus

08/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The president of the committee on foreign affairs of the EP, Elmar Brok, and the President and vice-president of the EP delegation for relations with Belarus, Bogdan Klich of Poland and Aldis Kuskis of Latvia, have once again criticised the anti-democratic conditions in which the electoral campaign has been taking place in Belarus ahead of the presidential elections of 19 March. "The EU must prepare an adequate response" for the post-election period, stressed the three members of the EPP-ED group, who are calling for concrete sanctions against those directly responsible for any irregularities with the elections, particularly a ban on entering the territory of the EU and the freezing of financial assets. Mr Brok, Mr Klich and Mr Kuskis are calling on the Commission to present a revised policy towards Belarus, based on the following principal: "isolate the authorities, support society".
