GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/financial perspectives

15/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - At the end of a meeting on 14 February in Vienna with the Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Council, Wolfgang Schüssel declared that he was confident that an inter-institutional agreement on financial perspectives for 2007-13 could be reached by April. Negotiations between the Council, European Commission and European Parliament began last January. Schüssel said that, “We want to work rapidly and finish negotiations as soon as possible”. According to a press release from the EU Presidency, Schüssel and Juncker also gave their approval for another form of Union funding, with new own resources. Mr Schüssel said that this issue would have to be discussed with the European Parliament and warned that, “it is important to introduce new ideas (on financing the EU), as the current method will no longer work in the future”.
