24/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, congratulates Anibal Cavaco Silva (the dominant figure on the Portuguese right) on his election on 22 January as the new President of Portugal with 50.59% of the vote, beating former Socialist President Mario Soares (who got 14.3%) and the Socialist Vice-President of the Portuguese parliament, Manuel Alegre, who stood as an independent and polled 20.7%.
