Strategy for urban environment

Brussels, 13/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the Commission presented the EU's strategy for the urban environment, aimed at a high quality of life and a high level of social well-being through improved environmental policies in European towns and cities, as well as the promotion of sustainable urban development. The EU will assist Member States and local and regional authorities to exchange good practice and experience (transport, improved air quality, spatial planning, greenhouse gas emissions, etc.), and encourage the generalisation of best practice. The strategy does not provide for any legislative proposals. It is the fifth of seven strategies set out by the 6th Environmental Action Programme (2002-2012) for tackling environmental problems requiring holistic responses in a coordinated and integrated manner.
