European giant ARCELOR, the world's second biggest steel-maker after MITTAL STEEL, is to buy a 20.5% stake in the largest steel producer in Turkey, ERDEMIR (USD 470 in profits, 3.6 mil tonnes of steel produced in 2004) through the acquisition of 41% of ATAER HOLDING, which owns 49.29% of ERDEMIR. MITTAL STEEL is in talks to buy a 49% stake in BAOTOU IRON & STEEL (assets of 35.1 bn yuan at the end of 2004, turnover of 21.5 bn yuan), a small, wholly state-owned steel-producer in Mongolia.
