30/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Portugal has called for EU protection of the geographical indication 'Sangueira de Barroso' for a smoked sausage made from the meat, fat and blood of the 'Bisaro' breed of pig or of cross-breeds that must be 50% Bisaro, and wheat bread and garlic and wine and spices. The sausage is black in colour and has a rough exterior. It has a cylindrical section of approximately 3 cm in diameter and it tied shut with two simple knots at each end, using a single piece of cotton twine, which gives the sausage a horseshoe shape. The geographical area for processing and packing is limited to the municipality of Montalegre, in the Vila Real district, and the geographical area for processing and packing is limited to the municipalise of Boticas, Chaves and Montalegre, in the Visa Real district. The territory consisting of these three municipalities is known and identified as 'Barroso'.
