COPS agreement of principle on border surveillance mission

Brussels, 15/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU Political and Security Committee (COPS) gave its agreement of principle, on Friday 9 September, to the launching of an EU mission for the management and control of the Ukraine-Moldova border, especially in the Transnistria section, in the aim of contributing to a solution to the conflict in Transnistria. Discussions are to be continued on the modalities of the mission, which should be jointly launched with the European Commission.

The agreement of principle given by the EU ambassadors came after presentation of the results of the EU mission, which took place between 23 and 29 August and which was responsible for assessing the situation at the border between Moldova and Ukraine and for deciding what form EU assistance in the region should take. These results were presented by the head of the mission, Adrian Jacobovits de Szeged, the EU Special Representative for Moldova. A release from the ITAR-TASS agency on Wednesday 7 September cites Mr Jacobovits upon his arrival in Chisinau as saying: “EU observers plan to proceed to surveillance of the border between Ukraine and Moldova as of October”.
