Brussels, 07/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - At the EU-India Summit, negotiations which started in January 2004 between the EU and India ended with the initialling of an agreement on India's involvement in the European satellite radio-navigation programme, Galileo. This agreement, which is designed to guarantee the optimum presence of Galileo in India and to ensure the cooperation needed to set up regional "augmentation" systems based on EGNOS and Galileo, was initialled in New Delhi on Wednesday, by Mr Fransisco Da Camara Gomes, the head of the delegation of the EC to India, on behalf of the EU and by Mr G.Madhavan Nair, who heads up the Space department in India. "This is another important step for the development of GALILEO as an international programme, but also a major milestone in the EU/India partnership", said the Vice President of the Commission with responsibility for Transport, Jacques Barrot. The EU has already concluded this type of agreement with China, Israel and Ukraine, and is carrying out negotiations with Argentina, Brazil, Morocco, Mexico, Norway, Chile, South Korea, Malaysia, Canada and Australia.
