25/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to Greek press agency ANA, the President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, said in Nicosia on Tuesday evening that the solution to the Cyprus problem will 'necessarily be a compromise, meaning a bizonal, bicommuncal federation.' Papadopoulos was addressing the opening ceremony of representatives of the two main overseas organisations, POMAK (World Federation of Overseas Cypriots) and PSEKA (International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus). He criticised Turkey's 'unacceptable' declaration whereby it said it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, made on the occasion of Turkey's recent signing of the Ankara agreement extending the EU-Turkey customs union to the ten new EU Member States, including Cyprus (see EUROPE 9002). Papadopoulos said: 'In a few words, turkey recognises existence of the Republic of Cyprus as a full and equal EU member state only for an instant. It recognises us only during the voting for the start of the accession of its negotiations with the EU, and ceases to recognise us straight after'.
