03/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - The terrorist attacks in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt on 23 July have apparently only had a limited impact on the travel and tourism sector, according to the WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council), which brings together the interests of the largest tour operators in the world. According to the forecasts of its crisis committee, which met further to the attacks, repercussions will be greatest for the next two months and more moderate for the rest of the year, and are unlikely to affect the rest of the Egyptian territory. Consumer confidence will also dip just slightly and temporarily, adds the WTTC, which affirms: "the international community must continue to travel in order to smash the objectives of the terrorists. Travel can do much to defeat terrorism because it encourages an enriching and educational exchange of customs between the many different cultures the world has to offer", stressed WTTC president Jean-Claude Baumgarten. According to the organisation's estimations, the travel and tourism sector is set to generate sixteen billion dollars in revenue in Egypt in 2005, which represents 15.4% of GDP.
