THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/religions

12/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - Over fifteen European religious leaders met the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, in Brussels on Tuesday as part of “permanent dialogue” between the European Commission, religions and the Churches. “Europe must stand united in its religious diversity more than ever, to reject and condemn the terrorism which has hit its territory”, said President Barroso. “This must go hand in hand with the efforts of the developed world to fight poverty and create a fairer world. We took another major step towards this in Gleneagles last week. Europe must continue on this path. Spiritual movements have an important role to play to help us to bear this fully in mind”, stressed Mr Barroso. Aside from terrorism, the meeting also focussed on the future prospects for European integration and the constitutional crisis of the EU. In November, President Barroso will meet representatives of non-confessional organisations.
