Brussels, 17/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Announcing on Monday that the main Iranian negotiator on the nuclear dossier, Hassan Rohani, was to meet the representatives of the EU3 (Germany, France and United Kingdom, who are negotiating on behalf of the EU) in Paris on 23 May for a new round of talks, described by Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi as “last chance”, Iran has agreed to delay the resumption of its nuclear conversion activities, a preliminary stage in uranium enrichment, by a few days. During this meeting, the Iranians hope to remind the Europeans that negotiations to obtain “objective guarantees” from Iran that it will not pursue a military nuclear programme could not continue unless Teheran is able to resume a section of its nuclear activities, including the conversion of uranium. The Europeans warned Teheran that they consider the resumption of the enrichment activities as a breach of the Paris Agreement of November 2004 and that they would have no other choice than to refer the matter to the Security Council. This dialogue of the deaf reveals a certain openness on the part of the Iranians, which cannot solely be put down to pressure brought to bear by the EU3: the Russian chief of diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, who met the French foreign minister Michel Barnier in Vienna on Sunday, confirmed “Russia's solidarity with the European approach”.
