06/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - Two MEPs from the German opposition have attacked German Social Democrat Evelyne Gebhardt, rapporteur for the European Parliament on the draft services directive, which for months has been at the heart of a row in Europe (see other article). CDU MEP Werner Langen (elected in Germany, Gebhardt was born in Montreuil-sous-Bois) accused the “Franco-German” Evelyne Gebhardt of mistakenly calling for the abandonment of the principle of the country of origin in the draft directive. According to Langen, this will simply exclude construction and building from the field of the directive's application for at least the transition period, the two sectors which are in any case subject to specific rules. The Liberal, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff exclaimed that the principle of the country of origin is at the heart of the proposal and should not be questioned. The FDP MEP criticised Ms Gebhardt of not having understood that the risks of social dumping did not come from the proposal but from the errors made from the German authorities in controlling the directive provisions on work (in the construction sector).
