Brussels, 23/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - At Wednesday's opening session, MEPs held a minute's silence in memory of Renzo Imbeni who died the previous day at the age of sixty. President Borrell paid homage to this “dear comrade” who had served as vice president of the European Parliament for ten years and who has also been Mayor of Bologna. Borrell said that he had known him personally during COSAC work (which brings together European affairs committees from the national parliaments) and that, “I remember his enthusiasm, his respect for his colleagues and his friendly smile”
Italian members of the PES group (which Imbeni belonged to, Democratici di sinistra) recalled their colleague with emotion, as did group president Martin Schulz and co-presidents of the Greens/EFA, Monica Frassoni and Daniel Cohn Bendit.
