Brussels, 27/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of Agricultural Organisations in the European Union (Copa) and the General Confederation of Agricultural Co-operatives in the European Union (Cogeca) welcome the recent decision to call for tenders for refunded common wheat exports (EUROPE 26 January and 22 January). But the organisations are calling on the European Commission and the Council of Ministers of the EU to “make representations to the Hungarian authorities in order to find a solution to the intervention problem in this country”. According to the organisations, the “dysfunction” of the Hungarian public storage system is making Community prices fall. Despite the decision on refunded common wheat exports, Copa and Cogeca have described a “worrying situation” on the cereals market: a record European crop in 2004; competition problems facing European cereals on the global market as a result of a strong euro; the dysfunction of the Hungarian storage system (intervention) that “severely penalises producer incomes” throughout the EU.
