"no" to Ankara on 17 December would upset reform process but real work begins on 18 December affirms Borrell

Brussels, 07/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Like Spain after the death of Franco, the way to Turkish EU accession is seen as the "guarantee of political, economic and social reform and a 'no' vote on 17 December would up upset the reform process, explained EP president Josep Borrell at a conference closing Turkey's visit. He added that if negotiations begin, no-one could predict the outcome. He warned that the message he was sending Turkey was that what really mattered was that from 18 December Ankara realised that the real work for future accession would begin at that moment and that it was clear for Mr Borrell that this was a bigger job than the Turkish authorities thought. He concluded that the important issues for Europe would be posed in the next few months and that their parliaments had to ensure debate based on the facts and not prejudice.
