Brussels, 10/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - Transparency International-Latvia and the European Movement organised an impromptu demonstration in Riga to call for the withdrawal of the nomination of Saeima (Latvian parliament speaker) Ingrida Udre as European Commissioner in the Barroso Commission, replacing Sandra Kalniete, European Commissioner since 1 May 2004 (see Europe of 5 August, p.2). The demonstrators headed first to the seat of parliament and then the European Commission offices in Riga, also calling for Udre to step down as Saeima speaker, and for the Latvian prime minister, Indulis Emsis, to resign. The organisations criticise the lack of transparency in Udre's nomination and accuse the government of failing to take account of the European elections. They believe that neither Udre nor Emsis are up to the task of remaining in office.
