Brussels, 20/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - Two and a half years after the end of negotiations, the Justice and Home Affairs Council on Monday finally authorised Europol to conclude a cooperation agreement with Switzerland. The dossier was hanging on negotiations between Switzerland and the European Union which were unblocked last month. Europol and the Swiss Federal Police Office may exchange information on specific cases, with personal data, and are also expected to exchange strategic analyses. Cooperation will cover drug trafficking, trafficking of nuclear and radioactive material, illegal immigration channels, people smuggling, the trafficking of stolen vehicles, crimes committed or likely to be committed in the context of terrorist activities, counterfeiting and forgery of payment means. Information may also be exchanged on related infringements, committed in relation to infringements on the list. The text of the agreement specifies at length the conditions whereby information transmitted may be used, the rule being to keep to the aim mentioned when the request is made. Europol and the Swiss Federal Office will exchange one or several liaison officers. The agreement also allows joint training activities to be conducted.
