Javier Solana presents ALTHEA mission in Bosnia

Brussels, 15.07.2004 (Agence Europe) - During his visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Javier Solana, High Representative for CFSP, officially announced to Bosnian authorities that the EU's military component would, as planned, take over from the NATO-led SFOR at the end of the year. He gave his assurance that the ALTHEA mission would have “all the material and personnel that it requires” to do the job (see above all EUROPE of 9 July). Accompanied by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Mr Solana specified that “continuity and development are precisely what this change-over is about”. Our aim, he said, is to put Bosnia-Herzegovina on the road to EU integration once and for all, which implies far-reaching and indepth reforms that have only been started recently. He went on to assure that “we have a structure, a force level and a political-military framework that is optimal” and ALTHEA will show that “Europe is capable of taking sensible, coordinated and robust steps to obtain a security environment that benefits its own citizens and those of its neighbours”.
