25/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The appeal by several Member States of the EU to insert a reference to Christianity in the preamble of the European constitution has provoked an array of different reactions at the European Parliament. MEP for the Lega Nord Mario Borghezio therefore wrote to the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, asking him to support such an initiative: according to Borghezio, Europe has to have the "courage to not renounce its profoundly historical identity, which is still visible today with the clock towers and our cathedrals". Italian Radical Maurizio Turco, on the contrary was worried about information about Spain also seeking such a reference which Turco regards as the Spanish Socialist Party "playing a double game of those supporting secularism at home but those professing a religious faith in Europe"?
