Brussels, 17/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The spokesperson for Commissioner Franz Fischler announced that the European Commission was waiting for more information from Poland for the sale of 300,000 tonnes of wheat from the country's stocks. He called for a joint "solution to the problem". While recognising that Polish operators had to face up to price rises after EU accession, the spokesperson ironically pointed out that Poland was now part of the Union and therefore had to accept Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) rules. This issue has to be solved by the Commission following examination by the cereals management committee Such an economic decision had to take into account market limitations, the spokesperson pointed out, added that the sale of such a large amount of wheat could upset the market and therefore have more consequences in other Member States. the spokesperson concluded that Poland had not yet sold the wheat and the Commission had requested more information and "then we'll see".
