Parliamentarians support continued structural aid for remote areas

Strasbourg, 10/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report of Margie Sudre on Tuesday in Strasbourg (EPP-DE France) on fishing in remote regions (the four French overseas departments of Guadeloupe, French Guyana, Martinique, Réunion and the autonomous areas of the Azores and Madera, as well as the autonomous Spanish Canary Islands), the European Parliament has come out in favour of continued public aid after 2006 for the updating of fishing fleets in these area. the EP is also requesting that these territories benefit from: greater Community aid for compensation for damages suffered with the elimination of certain fisheries products; the setting up of statistical indicators for assessing the impact of the Common fisheries Policy (CFP); the creation of a fisheries observatory in each of these regions to better control fishing resources; the establishment of a fund for diffusing new technology; the setting up of regional advisory boards in relevant fishing zones.
