THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/federalists

12/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - Lutz Hager, President of the Young European Federalists, called on EU Member States to resume negotiation on the European Constitution, considering that, if consensus is not reached at the European elections, "not only the EU will present itself to voters as being in a disastrous state, but there is also the risk that reform will be blocked for some time". It is not a matter of reinventing the wheel, he said, saying it is enough to resume the draft European Convention and, if no solution is reached in the near future, then the Convention would have to be convened again. Furthermore, the Young European Federalists reject the idea of a "core" Europe and say that the solution of a strong vanguard is certainly not the best way to put pressure on hesitant Member States.
