THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/igc/spain

10/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to El Pais, Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Aznar said in answer to questions on the Spanish position at the IGC concerning majority voting in Council (during the press conference at the close of the Spain/Morocco summit in Marrakesh, on 9 December), that: "the points of disagreement should be placed on the table and solutions should be sought (…) Negotiations must be held whether they are successful or not (…). The agreement must cover the interests of all parties. Spain has a position that is just as respectable as all the others and must be taken into consideration like the others". According to AFP, Mr Aznar also said it is the "responsibility of the Italian Presidency" if it has not made proposals on majority in Council. Either it was not considered appropriate, "or the Presidency has given up seeking agreement", or "it believes there must be other ways", he added.
