08/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of the European and Japanese textiles organisations, Euratex and JTF, feel that all members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) should take part "actively and substantially in tariff reductions and in the removal of non-tariff barriers", by discussing the chapter on market access and non-agricultural goods of the Doha Development Agenda. "These negotiations should be carried out on a sectorial basis, which should be obligatory for all members and independent of any general formula", they told the Cancun Summit. They also believe that the concept of getting rid of tariffs is "unrealistic", and its effect would be that of depriving less advanced countries of "the advantages of existing bilateral arrangements". Lastly, they call upon the Trade Ministers of the 147 to ensure that commercial defence instruments, such as anti-dumping, are "appropriate to be used efficiently against unfair commercial practices, which seriously distort the market".
