08/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Trades Unions Congress (ETUC) will join the 150 members of the international unionist delegation which will meet in Cancun next week, to make sure that "the cycle of trade negotiations (underway) turns into a development cycle". This, highlights the spokesperson for workers in Europe, implies: the changing of many rules "which have slowed down developing countries", the reform of the agricultural policies of the EU, the United States and many other industrialised countries "to put an end to protectionism and give third world producers fair access to our markets", respect for social norms and for good-conduct rules for multinationals. ETUC is furthermore opposed to "any initiative which would undermine public services", and will insist on the need to maintain and reinforce the European social model "in order to guarantee workers' involvement in the change-management process".
