Brussels, 28/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - The presidential elections in Rwanda, which were won by incumbent President Paul Kagamé, were tainted by fraud and irregularity, MEP Colette Flesch (ELDR, Luxembourg), Head of the EU electoral monitoring mission on the ground, told AFP. Ms Flesch mainly noted cases of illegal manipulation of the list of voters, the stuffing of ballot boxes and intimidation by representatives of Paul Kagamé. She welcomes, however, the way these first elections since the 1994 genocide unfolded in the calm and without violence. The EU mission's report was welcomed by the main opposition candidate, Faustin Twagiramungu, but refuted by Mr Kagamé's side.
