Brussels, 31/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Council adopted on Wednesday, by written procedure, a Decision for an Agreement signed at the end of April between the European Community and Canada on the trade in wines and spirits. The EU and Canada must now meet a list of requirements to enable the agreement enter into force. This will include: mutual recognition of oenological practices and processes and product specifications, as well as strict criteria (concerning consumer protection and quality standards); new oenological practices or modifications to be recognised by he other party; the geographical indications of wine and spirit drinks will be protected in the territory of the other party; rules concerning wine certification whereby neither of the parties can impose a more restrictive system than the one applied on he date of entry into force of this agreement; the setting up of a joint committee for ensuring proper functioning of the agreement, the resolution of conflicts arising between the parties will be dealt within the dispute settlement mechanism (EUROPE 25 June).
