Brussels, 31/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - This week Spain and Poland agreed to join forces to obtain, during the IGC beginning on 4 October, the maintaining of the system for weighting votes at the Council, included in the Treaty of Nice. During a meeting in Warsaw, the Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister, Ana Palacio and her Polish counterpart, Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, declared that the Treaty of Nice system allowed small and medium countries to get their voices heard by the large countries. Mr Cimoszewicz stated that, "We are proclaiming our desire to work together very closely on many issues and we hold an identical position on the issue of the voting system". The Treaty of Nice grants Spain and Poland the same number of votes (27), just two votes less than Germany that has, however, a population twice the size.
