Criticisms of new eurovignette proposals

Brussels, 28/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Federation for Transport and the Environment (F&E) is unhappy with the European Commission's proposed changes to the 1999 eurovignette directive on the taxation of lorries using the EU's roads. The association agrees that the 1999 directive needs amending, but fears the new proposals would encourage the building of new roads. Stephanos Anastasiadis from T&E regrets that under cross-financing, the proposal only plans a 25% increase in toll roads in sensitive areas to fund alternatives to road transport. He is also unhappy that the tariff options will only apply to the trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and certain parallel routes used by lorry drivers to avoid TEN-T axes. F&E is therefore calling for the proposal to simply be withdrawn.
