Brussels, 02/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has adopted a decision recognising that Argentinean legislation guarantees an adequate level of personal and sensitive data protection. This decision taken in the framework of directive 94/46 on personal data protection, recognises the validity of the Argentinean law that entered into force in November 2000. The Argentinean Ambassador to the EU, Jorge Remes Lenicov explained in a communiqué that the law, adopted after a year of negotiations, would allow for more flexibility in procedures when transferring personal data from European companies to Argentina. The decision will also open the door to the transfer of data held by banks, social services or direct marketing, for example. This is the fourth decision of this kind involving third countries, following the recognition of legislation in Hungary, Switzerland and Canada, as well as the agreement with the USA.
