01/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Economic and Social committee of the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC) have underlined the "need to master public spending" and have highlighted the negative consequences of too much emphasis on savings to finance and anti-debt measures. ELEC is putting more stress on the need for reduced public deficits, "especially through moderation of public spending… even if public investment is indispensable in certain domains and can be funded by temporary imbalances. It also calls for the modernisation of the services of general interest management and "an authority or committee of wise men", with the latter (in each country) playing "the role of competition tribunal and guarantor of an adequate level of quality and cost efficiency".
