Iran denies American accusations about its military programme

Brussels, 12/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - Reacting to the "incorrect allegations" made by Washington about its nuclear programme (see EUROPE of 3 May, p.7), Iran reaffirms that its nuclear activities are "for peaceful purposes and transparent". Abolghasem Delfi, Teheran Ambassador for the European Union, recalls in this context the remarks made by the Iranian representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, who restated Iran's commitment to ensure its security within the context of the international community. The programme that the United States is pointing at is intended to provide Iran with an energy production capacity of over 20000 Mwe (following the re commendations made during the seventies by US experts from the Stanford Research Institute), given the fact that its oil production could be largely absorbed by domestic demand within two decades, Iranian officials say.
