GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/state aid

27/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission adopted a recommendation addressed to the United Kingdom with a view to abolition or reform of the Exempt Companies regime in Gibraltar, considering that the tax exemption they enjoy constitutes State aid. On the other hand, it authorised rescue aid granted by the British government to the electricity group British Energy plc to allow it to keep afloat in the short term, until it finds a longer term solution to its difficulties. The Commission also ordered State aid of EUR 545,000 to be recovered from the Spanish company Refractarios Especiales. EUROPE will come back to these three decisions.
