08/11/2002 (Agence Europe) -In a press release, the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) announces that it has closed an internal investigation opened in February 2000 on the use of European Commission official vehicles outside the framework of official missions, and more specifically on the "use of two official vehicles by a former Commissioner and the connected misuse of drivers and fuel expenses" (Ed.: the Commissioner in question being Martin Bangemann). OLAF, who notes there is no case for handing the matter over to "any competent judicial authority", recommends that: "the use of official vehicles and drivers by Commissioners should be clarified so as to avoid similar situations in the future; - should the case arise, the application of disciplinary procedures by the competent authorities (President of the Commission and Secretary General) would be envisaged; - recovery of the sums wrongly spent would be sought from all persons who received sums not justified by official missions".
