19/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - A Eurostat report states that ecotaxes (taxes on energy, non-energy transport taxes, and taxes on pollution and resources) raised revenue of € 228 billion in the EU in 1999, or 2.8 % of GDP. The percentage of GDP represented by ecotaxes varies from one country to the next: it is lowest in France, Austria, Sweden and Belgium and highest in Denmark, Portugal, the Netherlands and Ireland. Finally, there is a slow but steady increase in the percentage of ecotaxes in total tax and social security revenues between 1980 and 1999, with the tax on transport showing the smallest increase and the tax on energy the sharpest.
