Brussels, 19/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), Javier Solana, made the following statement on Monday: "I warmly welcome the understanding reached yesterday by Israelis and Palestinians. The EU has been supportive throughout of contacts among those responsible for security. I am heartened that such contacts proved successful in the end. My firm hope is that this limited agreement will be conducive to a much-needed change of atmosphere between the parties and respective public opinions. It can also provide the first building block for increased cooperation in the near future, across a broader scope of interests than security and humanitarian relief. We remain ready and committed to assist the parties on this path, starting with the upcoming Paris meeting under the auspices of the Quartet."
