Brussels, 16/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council on Monday, Spain, Italy, France and Finland had a lively debate over the final location of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), taking advantage of an intervention by Commissioner David Byrne, who had suggested to the ministers that the EFSA provisionally remain in Brussels for at least two or three years in order to assess the relative merits of the candidate cities (Barcelona in Spain, Parma in Italy, Lille in France or Helsinki in Finland). The Council adopted without debate the decisions on the list of 14 members of the management committee and the rules governing the selection of personnel (see details in Europe of 5 July 2002, p.9). Byrne said the Commission representative on the EFSA management committee would be the current Director General of DG Health and Consumer Protection, Robert Coleman. He also said that the first EFSA management committee meeting would be held part way through September 2002.
