New common position in support of peace

Brussels, 01/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Council has adopted a common position on Angola, replacing the earlier version from 2000. The new common position takes account of serious political change in Angola, with the European Union affirming its determination to support the peace, national reconciliation and democracy process; support a long-term political solution; call on the government and UNITA to fully implement all the measures in the Memorandum of Understanding of 4 April 2002; encourage UNITA to reorganise itself as a political party; encourage the government to hold full and free elections as soon as possible; call on the government to step up efforts to deal with the humanitarian situation and create conditions whereby international aid can be granted access. Alongside initiatives taken under ESDP and continuing political dialogue, the EU will act in line with the decision taken by the United Nations Security Council to suspend for 90 days the ban on UNITA leaders travelling and to declare itself prepared to lift all sanctions decided by the Security Council as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding has actually been implemented.
