Parliament approves, with amendments, common position for creating European maritime safety agency

Brussels, 21/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - In adopting the report of Emmanoui Mastorakis (PES, Germany), the European Parliament has given its approval, with some technical amendments, to the common position of the Council on creating a European Maritime Safety Agency. Commissioner Philippe Busquin, declared at the vote that, "the Commission supports adoption of these amendments, which are expected to be approved by the Council before the end of the Spanish Presidency". Parliament stresses: 1) The necessity of imposing a two month limit for adoption of the Agency's work programme by the management committee in order to avoid it being without the work programme for any significant length of time; 2) The fact that the decision to rule that certain points on the agenda were confidential and therefore to be examined without representatives from the relevant sectors being present cannot be exclusively decided by the Head of the Agency's management committee, other members must also be able to decide on this issue.
