EU ready to provide its support following accident in Lagos

Brussels, 05/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Spanish Presidency made the following Declaration on behalf of the EU:

"On Sunday 27 January, massive explosions at an army base in Ikeja, Lagos, resulted in the death of hundreds of ordinary Nigerians, many of them women and children, and caused enormous damage to businesses and homes. EU Member States are consulting urgently on possible emergency relief and humanitarian aid to the Government of the state of Lagos, to help cope with this difficult situation. At this moment of mourning, the EU would like to express its most sincere sympathy to the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the Government of Lagos State and to the victims of this dreadful catastrophe, and offer condolences to the families of the bereaved.

The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the EU, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries, members of the European Economic Area align themselves with this declaration."
