Approval of EU work against terrorism - In favour of continuing co-operation with Member States as with EU

Brussels, 30/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The work accomplished by the EU since September 11 has been "superb", stressed the Co-ordinator for Counter-Terrorism of the American State Department, Francis X. Taylor. Francis Taylor also welcomed the fact that the Spanish Presidency should have reaffirmed EU solidarity (see yesterday's EUROPE, p. 11). Whereas Spain is preparing to propose an legal co-operation agreement between the European Union and the United States, including on extradition, the American Ambassador stated that he hoped to both further ties forged by bilateral agreements with all Member States and co-operate directly with the European Union. We must pursue our dialogue, notably on data protection and extradition, he went on. Our will to strengthen co-operation in this field does not mean that it is poor, but that, although good, it can be improved, he said.
