Paris, 04/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The future Director of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Thailand's Mr. Supachai Panitchapakdi said in Paris Monday evening that the European Union had shown the example by placing trade at the service of the least advanced developing countries, notably with its "All but Weapons" initiative. For the former Trade Minister, who is to take over from Mike Moore in September 2002, the 142 member countries of the WTO will have to take inspiration from this type of approach in the new multilateral trade negotiations round launched in Doha. "The spirit of Doha, is that trade can only be useful if it serves to eradicate poverty. And I believe that Europe has taken the lead, that it has remarkable leadership", he declared.
