Brussels, 19/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The United Left/Nordic Green Left group (GUE/NGL) is organising a round table in Strasbourg on 24 October against the backdrop of the European Parliament's plenary session on the reopening of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, over two and a half years after the disaster that cost 39 lives. The meeting will discuss "global, realistic and long-term" solutions to stop the Alps getting clogged up with ever greater volumes of traffic. The round table will be chaired by MEP Luigi Vinci (Rifondazione Comunista) and Roseline Vachetta (LCR). The following people will be attending: Reinhold Messner (Italian Green); Eligio Milano (spokesperson for "Stop ai TIR" in the Valle d'Aosta in Italy); Georges Unia (President of the Mont Blanc protection group ARSMB); Michel Revaz (Deputy Director of the International Committee for the Protection of the Alps); Renate Zauner (President of Transport Europe); Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan (President of the Bellerive Foundation and Alp Action); and Carlo Ripa di Meana (former European Commissioner and former Italian Environment Minster).
