10.2 million euro aid to Macedonia - Last slice of 45 million euro for Kosovo

Brussels, 03/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the visit by Javier Solana and Chris Patten to Skopje and Pristina, the Commission announced the granting of the last slice of aid this year for Kosovo (45.4 million euro, out of a total of 320 million). We have kept out promises, it is now up to the Kosovars to keep theirs and respect the minorities and the rule of law, declared the Commissioner's spokesperson. The Commission also decided on Wednesday to grant 10.2 million euro in aid to Macedonia. This aid, to be funded by the Rapid Reaction Mechanism, is part of an additional package of 30 million euro promised to FYROM. This sum will serve to repair electricity distribution networks (6 million), mine-clearance (1.2 million), police training (2 million), support for the media (0.5 million) and assistance for implementation of the Ohrid Accord (2.5 million). This aid comes on top of a first slice of aid from the Rapid Reaction Mechanism (2.5 million) earmarked for the reconstruction of housing, implementation of which began on 24 September. An "emergency" package of 12 million euro for the reconstruction of houses, the return of refugees and continuation of the restoration of electricity networks, funded from the Cards Programme for reconstruction in the Balkans, could then be adopted mid-October. Other aid could also be announced, including macro-financial aid of 50 million euro, at the donor conference for Macedonia. This conference, scheduled for 15 October, may be postponed- the decision will be taken following the visit to Skopje. Worth noting that this package of aid comes on top of the 42.5 million euro initially planned for this year, and of which nothing yet has been spent, as the agreement on the financing arrangements was only signed three weeks ago, the Commission underpins. Macedonia has, however, received 4.5 million euro in humanitarian aid. The EU will again stress in Skopje that the granting of all this aid depends on the adoption and implementation of reforms.
