WTO publishes two texts in view of ministerial meeting in Doha

Brussels, 27/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Anthony Gooch, spokesman for Commissioner Pascal Lamy confirmed on Thursday that the WTO was in the process of communicating two texts to its 142 members which should serve as basis for the work of the Organisation's 4th ministerial conference to be held in Doha (Qatar) from 9 to 13 November: on the one hand, a draft declaration and agenda, and, on the other, a paper on the issue of implementing WTO rules (also see EUROPE of 24 and 25 September, p. 13 and 26 September, p.15). According to Mr. Gooch, the fact that these two documents should have come out simultaneously is a positive signal to developing countries, in the sense that the WTO Secretariat is in this way showing them that their concerns would be taken into consideration. The two papers, which may be amended, will be examined in Geneva on 3 October. According to information at our disposal, the draft declaration acknowledges that the concerns of all the Organisation's member States must be taken into consideration, and the agenda covers all the subjects relating to the liberalisation of trade. However, the contents of these two papers are said to call for efforts on the part of the Union.
