Brussels, 21/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Polish Government under Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek, whom the polls say will not be victorious during the elections of 23 September, has appealed to the EU to speed up the European integration process and enlargement following the world instability after the attacks on 11 September. A declaration by the Buzek government, adopted on 19 September, states the recent tragedy demonstrates the need for consolidation and acceleration of the European process. It declares that the Polish government, being aware of the gravity of the situation, and after consultation with the main parliamentary groups, states it is willing to speed up accession negotiations - including on key chapters and the sensitive chapters - and calls for a similar attitude from the EU. It states it is "particularly urgent" to cooperate on: - revision of external border control mechanisms; - strengthened cooperation with Europol; - modification of cooperation methods between the EU and candidate countries regarding CFSP; - intensified crisis prevention exercises; - and asylum and immigration. Poland is ready to consolidate cooperation in other fields considered by the EU as important from the point of view of common challenges, concludes the declaration.
