Brussels, 09/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - Speaking through the voice of the envoys sent to Washington early this week to report on the visit by the European Troika to the Korean peninsula, the Union invited the United States to resume dialogue with North Korea as soon as possible, while warning Pyongyang that it remains very concerned about the fact that it continues to export missiles. "We have always believed in the policy of dialogue as far as possible, but the US Administration must draw its own conclusions", said Lars Danielsson, Secretary of State for the Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson (whom he accompanied to Korea). Together with Percy Westerlund, Director for External Relations at the European Commission, who was with him in Washington, Mr Danielsson specified that the exports of North Korean missiles were a "major concern" of the Union in the prospect of normalising diplomatic relations with Pyongyang. Mr Danielsson and Mr Westerlund reaffirmed that the EU does not intend to take over from the United States in this region but that it hopes to stress "there is international concern about the situation in North Korea". The Troika's approach was favourably received by the US Administration, they pointed out after their meeting at the State Department with members of the National Security Council (NSC) on Monday, while another Community delegation "debriefed" Tokyo.
