Brussels, 20/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a Communication adopted on Tuesday, the European Commission outlines its ideas to reinforce the transatlantic relations to a few strategic themes and this while targeting concrete results. The aim of this reassessment, initiated by Chris Patten and Pascal Lamy, is to ensure a "high level of political engagement to avoid that the process becomes too bureaucratic and cumbersome", added the Commission spokesperson. Thus, six years after the launch of the New Transatlantic Agenda and when the new Administration has arrived in Washington, the Commission suggests among others to establish priorities that would form the political framework for short and medium-term cooperation, including: emerging security challenges, globalisation and the multilateral trading system, the fight against organised crime, energy, consumer protection, the macroeconomic issues, the fight against poverty in the developing countries and the digital economy. Europe will return to this in a later edition.
