EU/Morocco negotiations on fishing make slow progress

Brussels, 09/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - The technical negotiations which were held on Thursday and Friday in Brussels allowed certain aspects of a possible fishing agreement between the European Union and Morocco to be made clear. As we pointed out before, it will not run for more than three years. Progress was made on technical issues such as surveillance of fishing activities, and, above all, the observers on board fishing vessels. The same is true concerning the delimitation of fishing zones but this is not yet final. Positions did come closer on the tricky question of compulsory offloading, but no agreement is yet in sight on this point. The fundamental problem of fishing possibilities offered by Morocco and their retribution by the EU remains intact.
